Rumba Cafe holds a couple hundred people at the most, and on a full night it feels like fewer. In a room this size the bar is never far from the stage, which is the point. You came to stand close to the band.
Where it is
The address is 2507 Summit Street in Old North, just north of Ohio State's campus. The venue describes the spot as south of the Hudson and Summit intersection and west of I-71. If you know the north campus stretch of High Street, you are only a few blocks east of it.
What gets booked
The booking side splits into local acts and national tours, and the calendar mixes the two freely. Small touring indie, roots and rock acts come through, and local bands headline here too. Soul and reggae nights, tribute sets and theme parties fill out the rest, from emo karaoke to yacht rock.
That range is the reason to keep an eye on this room. A band you catch here from ten feet away may be playing somewhere much bigger the next time it comes through. Our indie calendar is where a lot of these shows land.
Parking
Rumba keeps this simple, and it is worth following to the letter.
- On street parking around the venue is free.
- The lot directly behind Rumba is not for show parking. The venue says cars without a permit or permission get towed.
- Old North streets fill up on weekend nights, so give yourself a few extra minutes to circle.
- A ride drops you right at the door on Summit Street, which saves the circling entirely.
Get there on time
For some shows, the venue notes that a ticket guarantees entry only until a set time. After that your ticket is still good, but if the room is full you may be waiting. In a space this small, that happens. Show up for the opener and you will not have to think about it.
Ages and door times vary by show, so check your ticket.
Make a night of it
Old North has other small rooms within reach. Ace of Cups is a short walk west on North High Street, and The Summit Music Hall is farther south on Summit. On a busy weekend you can catch an early set at one and a late set at another.
